System documentation is an often neglected area of network administration that should not be overlooked. It becomes more critical as the network expands. Information Networking Company will assist the network administrator in developing a method for documenting the network. As a minimum, system documentation should include a diagram of the physical topology of the network: cable numbers and routes; node address of each network card; location of file servers, communication servers, database servers, FAX servers, gateways, routers, switches/hubs; and software versions loaded on each server.
